GOALS - Whitchurch Alport 90 + 5'

A match that Vics always looked the most likely to win but they fell to a late sucker punch from a decent Whitchurch team.
The first half was a fairly cagey affair with initially Vics pressing without managing to create any clear cut chances despite having 6 corners in the first 20 minutes or so. Indeed , it was Alport who came nearest to scoring first after 31 minutes as Jud Ellis received the ball from a throw , and cut in easily beating his man near the goal line, but couldn't find the far corner as he shot from a difficult angle. There followed a spell of Alport pressure which Vics defended well before Vics broke, and Grundy received a pass from Fleming, moved forward and fired a shot from 25 yards which didn't threaten the Alport goal. 39 minutes gone, and a long goal kick from Danny Taberner was won in the air by Doran, picked up by Joel Brownhill whose deft flick found Harvey Whyte just outside the area but his shot was deflected over the bar for a corner. The corner was headed back out to Ryan Winder who returned the ball back to the far post where Keiron Kenny caused havoc in the Alport area, and the ball dropped to Barski on the far post , but the keeper reacted quickly to block his poked shot from 3 yards out. A minute later, Fleming laid the ball back to Barski who slid a pass through to Whyte , again in space on the edge of the box, but he miscued his shot well wide.
HALF-TIME : Vics 0 Whitchurch Alport 0

Vics came out with more purpose in the second half, and within two minutes, a Matty Clarke cross was cleared just over his own bar by a Alport defender. The resulting corner was fired over to just beyond the far post where Rob Doran headed back across goal, and the ball fell to Clarke at the near post but his off balance shot hit the post from just 3 yards out. Vics should have taken the lead after 52 minutes, when a brilliant cross from Matty Clarke found Harvey Whyte in acres of space on the far side of the box 8 yards out, but his header was a poor one when it only needed to be on target. Alport came close on 66 minutes as Hughes fired in a free kick which got a deflection off the wall which wrong footed Taberner but fortunately it cannoned off the post and was cleared. 72 minutes in, and Alport claimed a penalty as Joe Cuff fell to the ground under challenge from Joe Camozzi, but the referee waved play on, close call though ! Vics had a good shout for a penalty after 76 minutes when a long throw from Clarke was flicked on by Doran and the ball was blocked by the outstretched arm of an Alport defender , but the referee remained unmoved ! Two minutes later, Camozzi picked up a loose ball just outside the Alport box, and weaved past three defenders but his shot was straight at Burzynski in the Alport goal. It was Vics doing all the pressing in the last ten minutes, and they thought they had snatched it as the game entered the first minute of stoppage time, as a prefect cross found Rob Doran who headed across the keeper towards the far corner of the net and substitute Morgan Crowther gleefully slammed the ball into the back of the net. The joy was short-lived though as the liner's flag was up for a very marginal offside. Then their dismay was deepened in the 5th minute of stoppage time as Alport beat the Vics' offside trap, and the ball was laid across goal for Sean Griffiths to slot the ball home for the winner.
