A game in which Vics gifted Ashton a goal, and then proceded to miss numerous chances to level the match and ending up being caught on the break. Ashton Athletic took the lead after just 6 minutes when a corner was missed by Taberner in net, and was poked home by Webster from 2 yards out. 3 minutes later, Taberner had to be alert to parry a Ashton effort away to safety whilst Vics first real chance came shortly afterwards when a throw in reached Joel Brownhill , and he truned his defender but his shot was straight at the keeper. Just a minute later, Jordan Darr did well to win the ball , then jinked past a defender but his shot was narrowly wide. Another Ashton corner again caused panic in the Vics defence, but this time they managed to somehow clear the ball to safety. 16 minutes in , Darrhyll Mason, found himself one on one with the keeper, pushed the ball past him and was promptly taken out by the Ashton number 1, but incredibly the referee waved play on. Ten minutes later, Mason flicked a ball on to Jordan Darr who was through , but his shot was well saved. Vics best chance came after 39 minutes, when Mason again was sent through one on one with the keeper, but he took it to far to the right and the chance was wasted.
HALF-TIME - Ashton Athletic 1 Northwich Vics 0
The second half opened with Vics wasting chance after chance, firstly after 46 minutes, a perfectly taken corner was allowed to go across the box without anyone attacking it, then Mason was again sent through one on one, but his shot was saved by the keeper's legs. Three minutes later, and again Mason latches onto a ball from Billy Whittle and though this time his shot beat the keeper, it also went just wide of the post Two quick corners to the Vics came to nothing , then Jordan Darr got in behind the defence but his shot clipped the outside of the post and went for a goal-kick. Vics were made to pay for these misses after 70 minutes, when Vics failed to win the ball in midfield and the ball was fed to Reid who finished well from the far post. Jordan Darr did manage to get the ball into the net after 75 minutes, but it was quite rightly ruled out for off-side, and although Vics kept pressing Ashton played the game out fairly comfortably to complete their 2-0 win
FULL TIME - Ashton Athletic 2 Northwich Vics 0
Steve Wilkes view on the game : " Really disappointed with the lads today. We were sloppy in the warm-up and that continued into the game, giving away another sloppy goal. I think the decision by the referee not to send the Ashton keeper off in the first half for a foul on Darrhyl Mason was a big turning point, he actually apologised at half time and said he'd got it wrong. But if you miss six one on ones with the keeper and defend like we did, you don't deserve anything. I know I've got a good bunch of lads and we'll aim to bounce back on Tuesday night and put things right "
