It was a match of two halves for Vics, with an uninspiring 1st half display reminiscent of Saturday’s match followed by an excellent second half where they showed just how good some of their football is !
It was a quiet start to the match with little or no action, and it was Vics who had the first effort at goal in the 11th minute when Kieran Hamm headed a Rokka free-kick straight at the keeper. Sporting then immediately went down the left before sending a first time strike wide of the post. 6 minutes later, they took the lead, and it was a simple goal…a long ball over the top, with Isai Marselia racing through and slotting the ball through Mendes’ legs into the net. Sporting were now having the best of it for the next 15 minutes or so without really threatening the Vics’ defence too much. Luc Ferry had a first time volley well saved by Ganley in the Sporting goal in the 33rd minute, and then a couple of minutes later, he headed just over the bar after a long ball was pumped into the box. It was Sporting however who had the clearest chance when a ball was flicked on in the box but they could only strike the ball wide of the net when well placed. Vics nearly levelled just before the break when Rokka flashed a shot just inches wide of the post from the edge of the area.
A first half with not a lot for Vics to shout about whilst Sporting looked dangerous with their long ball tactic causing Vics problems with the speed of their forwards.
HALF TIME : Sporting Khalsa 1 Northwich Vics 0
However Vics had the best possible start to the second half when Joe Duckworth harried Sporting into conceding a corner, which Elliot Rokka promptly curled direct into the net over the keepers’ head to equalise. Vics were looking sharper now and started to press Sporting back and have more of the ball. They then took the lead in the 60th minute when Kieran Hamm was shoved in the back as he was going in on goal, and Duckworth coolly converted the resultant penalty. Vics were looking comfortable now but just 4 minutes later, Sporting equalised as Mendes was caught in no mans land as a ball was played round the back of Vics’ defence and Isai Marselia easily slotted the ball into the net. A setback for the Vics but they kept pressing. Rokka nearly repeated his goal direct from a corner in the 71st minute but Sporting just managed to scramble the ball away before it crossed the line. Vics finally got their reward for their more positive outlook when in the 79th minute, after a fine move Joe Duckworth beat the keeper in a chase for a 50-50 ball and got to the ball first to poke the ball past Ganley into the net. 3-2 to the Vics. Vics then managed the game superbly for the final 10 minutes or so to record an excellent victory which looked unlikely at the interval
