Goals : Northwich Vics : Davis 90+2’
Vics claimed an important win against rivals Hanley Town with a dramatic last minute goal by Harry Davis.
The first half contained few real chances as two good teams tended to cancel each other out. Vics had a good shout for a penalty after 19 minutes when Jefferson Abreu was hauled down in the box as a corner came in…looked clear but the referee waved play on. Matty Clarke and then Kieran Hamm had shots over the bar before Max Sutton slid Abreu in on goal but his effort was well saved. 36 minutes in, Vics’ keeper Andre Mendes attempted a quick clearance which went to a Hanley player who curled a shot towards the top corner. Mendes redeemed himself with a stupendous save to tip it round the post. Vics should have taken the lead in the 41st minute after the best move of the half. Kandeke got down the right, crossed the ball low across the box where Sean Cooke flicked the ball just past the near post from 5 yards out.
An even first half with half chances for both sides.
HALF-TIME : Hanley Town 0 Northwich Vics 0
Hanley had a big chance early in the second half as the ball bounced around the Vics’ area but they fired the ball over the bar. A minute later, debutant Josh Langley got onto the end of a cross but sent the ball wide of the post. Hanley were slowly pressing Vics back now, but Vics were looking strong at the back and limiting Hanley to half chances. Harry Davis cleared an effort from the line, whilst Mendes made a fine stop to his right on 76 minutes. Vics however had chances of their own, with Cooke having a free kick well saved, whilst Abreu did well beating a couple of men but his powerful shot was straight at the keeper. As the match entered the last 10 minutes, Vics had started to regain control . A quick throw in allowed A-Jay Leitch-Smith to race onto the ball and he half-vollied the ball agonisingly just wide of the far post with the keeper beaten. Then in the 2nd minute of added on time, a long ball was played into the middle of the box Josh Langley rose highest but his header struck against the post and fell to Harry Davis who was on hand to slam the rebound into the back of the net to send the Vics fans delirious.
