With Vics confirmed as being guaranteed 2nd place, and Coton Green not having a chance of reaching the play-offs, this last match of the regular season had the air of a pre-season friendly though Vics were looking for a confidence boosting performance before the play-offs.
Indeed they got off to the best possible start with two goals in the first 5 minutes, firstly A-Jay Leitch-Smith was put through by a great ball from Abreu, and rounded the keeper but took it wide, but managed to pull the ball back across goal for Will Igoe to tap the ball home. Two minutes later, Bas Yusuff danced around two defenders before finding Leitch-Smith who did the rest with a fine finish. Abreu and then Leitch-Smith were then denied by Coton’s keeper as Vics pressed forward with intent. However, Coton Green were nearly handed a way back into the match as Andre Mendes mis-kicked giving the ball to a Coton player but he was denied by a great tackle from Matt Harrison before the rebound effort was denied by another big tackle, this time from Matty Clarke. Vics were then awarded a penalty as Yusuff chested a ball down for Will Igoe to beat his man before getting taken down in the area. Abreu confidently despatched the penalty giving the keeper no chance. Vics were passing the ball around well and it was no surprise when in the 40th minute, Vics got their 4th goal. Leitch-Smith found space out wide and pulled the ball back for Sean Lawton to find the bottom corner with a fine finish.
With Vics 4 - 0 up , and making 3 changes at half time, it was probably no surprise that the second half didn’t match the first with Vics seemingly taking things easy, and somewhat lackadaisically ! Abreu did curl a shot over the bar in the 60th minute but it was Coton Green who scored next as they did well down the left and laid the ball back for a fine finish from the edge of the area. Apart from a minor case of handbags which resulted in 3 bookings, the match was meandering to the finish with both teams seemingly settling for the result. However, Coton Green grabbed a second goal in the 1st minute of added on time with a fine header past Mendes. Any faint hope they may have had of a dramatic finish was quickly extinguished as their keeper made a hash of a clearance allowing Will Bentley the simple task to take the ball past him and slide it into the net to make it five for the Vics.
A confidence boosting win for Vics as they head into the play offs where they will meet AFC Wolverhampton City next weekend.
