Vics threw away a chance to keep pressure on Hanley with a poor lack lustre second half performance, even though they knew Hanley were 2 down at half-time!
Vics shaded the first half without really threatening, with the best chance for them coming from a Matt Harrison header in the 29th minute which was tipped over by the 1874 keeper. 1874 threatened as rarely as Vics with Mendes only called upon in the 21st minute when he pulled off a great save to deny 1874 the opener.
With news of Hanley being two down half time, the expected Vics onslaught never came and instead some poor defending by Vics in the 47th minute allowed a free header which looped over Mendes into the net. Five minutes later, it could have been two as 1874 had a great chance from just 4 yards out but dragged the ball wide. To be honest Vics never looked likely to get back into the match and Mendes produced another great save to deny 1874 a second. The best and probably only chance for Vics to get back on level terms came in the 77th minute when Jefferson Abreu headed over after a brilliant flick on from Kieran Hamm. 1874 settled the match when they were awarded a penalty in the 85th minute. Mendes produced an excellent save but wasn’t backed up by his defence and 1874 pounced on the rebound to score.
A disappointing display, especially second half but 2nd place secured but they will have to show more resilience and more desire if they going to succeed in the play offs.
