Vics took the 3 points in a match that they dominated the possession as Uttoxeter sat back and invited Vics onto them leaving Andre Mendes a virtual spectator in the Vics’ net.
Vics attacked from the start with debutant Aaron Fleming down the left side. Midfielder Leo Tanswell was first to try his luck in the 5th minute as he placed a low shot just wide. A minute later Leitch-Smith had his effort turned away for a corner after Fleming had danced his way around a couple of defenders. 14 minutes in, and Vics went close twice, firstly Josh Langley rose highest at the back post to force Charlie Wood in the Uttoxeter net into a good save and from the second corner , it was Langley again who went even closer as he crashed a header against the bar. It was still all Vics but Town’s defence was holding firm as Vics kept pressing. Yusuff had a curling effort blocked as did Will Igoe shortly afterwards whilst Joe Hurst tried a speculative effort from 35 years out which brought a decent save from Wood. A quieter period of possession followed for Vics as Town sat deep though Vics nearly took the lead on the stroke of half time as a ball in from Fleming was diverted goalwards by a Town defender and only kept out by an excellent reaction save with his legs by Wood. It had been nearly all Vics in the first half but they couldn’t find the end product.
The second half continued in the same vein, with Aaron Fleming causing Town problems down the left. Keeper Wood made a fine save from Hamm as he rose highest from a long throw early in the half and Fleming was continually crossing the ball across with Vics players just not able to to convert. Uttoxeter finally had a chance in the 56th minute and it was only a last ditch tackle by Tanswell which saved Vics . Three minutes later, Hamm thought he had scored as he received the ball in the area and slid the ball under the keeper into the net, but the liner raised her flag after what seemed an age ! Sean Cooke fired a free-kick just wide as the match wore on with it looking more and more like that it was going to be one of those days. However in the 73rd minute, Fleming sent a superb cross in onto the head of Kieran Hamm who did the rest as his header gave Wood no chance. This spurred Vics on, and three minutes later Vics should have had a penalty as Hamm raced past the full-back and was brought down a good foot inside the box, however the referee ruled it was just outside the box! and the free-kick came to nothing. However Vics were’t going to be denied a second and in the 88th minute, Cooke played a superb ball in for substitute Ryan Atkinson to run onto and slam the ball from an acute angle into the net to make the game safe.
