Vics put aside the early disappointment of going behind after just 6 minutes to ultimately record a convincing 4 -1 victory over Romulus today to stay top of the table.
Vics put early pressure on the Romulus goal with Tanswell and then Atkinson testing Callum Smith in the Romulus net with shots on target. However in the 6th minute Romulus counter attacked and broke quickly leading to Josh McKenzie finishing well at the far post to give the Roms an early lead. Vics weren’t behind for long though as in the 12th minute, Leo Tanswell came in from the left and fired a shot in which Smith saved well but the ball fell for Sean Cooke who made no mistake from 12 yards out. Vics then had plenty of the ball and kept probing away at the Romulus defence without making too many chances. They did take the lead however in the 34th minute as a corner was played deep into the box straight to Harry Davis who fired a stunning half volley into the net giving Smith no chance. A great finish ! Mama Djabi saw a header go just over the bar before he was forced off with an injury just before half-time to be replaced by Will Bentley making his debut, after impressing for Vics Reserves.
Vics’ dominance continued in the second half with Bentley going close after being put in one on one though Mendes in the Vics’ net was then called into action after 52 minutes as he brilliantly tipped over a great strike from the edge of the area. Two minutes later, Vics put daylight between themselves and Romulus with a brilliant solo effort from Jefferson Abreu. He cut in from the left, and fired a superb unstoppable strike into the far corner of the net from 30 yards. Vics were cruising now. Yusuff had a good effort well saved whilst Bentley’s cross just evaded Abreu at the far post as Vics controlled the match. As the game entered added-on time, Vics were awarded a penalty as a Bentley cross was clearly handed in the area by a Romulus defender. Up stepped Bentley to confidently send the ball low into the left hand corner of the net as Smith dived the wrong way.
