A 20 minute spell in the second half in which they scored 3 goals saw Vics crush Winsford after the visitors had had the better of the first half.
Winsford started the match better and had the first good chance after 5 minutes as a Karl Rogers throw was put into the area and Reece Davies flicked the ball into the side netting. Sam Latham then curled an effort just over the bar, as Winsford continued to pressure the Vics defence. However Vics always looked dangerous when they did have the ball, and Atkinson blasted over after great work down the left from Abreu. Winsford then took the lead in the 30th minute as Vics’ keeper Mendes came running out but didn’t get to the ball , which left Ollie Pope the chance to curl the ball into an empty net. Vics started to respond and Djabi just failed to connect with a Cooke ball in when well placed, and Cooke and then Atkinson both had shots well turned away for corners as half-time approached.
HALF-TIME : Northwich Vics 0 Winsford United 1
Vics came out firing after half time, and Mamadou Djabi should have scored just 2 minutes in as he managed to fire over from close range as the ball fell to him at the far post. Djabi then headed just over from the middle of the box, before firing wide after good work from Ryan Atkinson. Vics finally equalised after 57 minutes as a corner was flicked on and fell nicely for Harry Davis to side foot the ball into the net. Just 3 minutes later, it was two for Vics as Cooke swung a free kick into the box and Djabi made no mistake with a rocket of a header. Winsford tried to respond quickly and Mendes was forced into a great save to push out a curling shot from Matty Birchall which was heading for the top corner. Vics were buoyant now though and Sean Cooke put the icing on the cake with a goal of sheer quality as he collected the ball 30 yards out, turned and sent a delightful chip over the keeper’s outstretched fingertips into the back of the net. Winsford to their credit never stopped trying and tested Mendes again as he saved low from Leo Tanswell. Tanswell then cracked an powerful shot against the post as Winsford pushed Vics right to the end but they held firm to record an important 3 points even at this early stage of the season.
FULL-TIME : Northwich Vics 3 Winsford United 1
10 consecutive wins now for the Vics as they stretch their lead at the top of the Midland league to 6 points. It was a closely fought match decided by Vics turning the heat on during that 20 minute spell.
