After Sunday’s cracking encounter, there was always the possibility that this Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round tie could prove something of an anti-climax. It certainly wasn’t.

Northwich Vics produced another hugely committed performance at the Marine Travel Arena, scoring early before defending superbly against a Bootle side who had already found the net 14 times in their opening four matches of the season. The hosts carried plenty of attacking threat throughout, but Vics showed tremendous organisation and determination to hold on for a deserved 1–0 victory.

The evening began evenly, with Bootle creating the first opportunity as Jay Roberts saw his effort deflected behind for a corner. Vics responded when Mikey Lawson sent a shot narrowly wide of the post.

It was Lawson who would make the decisive contribution in the 13th minute, and what a goal it was. Cutting inside his full-back, Lawson drove into the area before unleashing a superb strike into the far corner, giving Bootle goalkeeper Joe Mason absolutely no chance.

Bootle immediately looked to respond. Beigan danced through several challenges before seeing a weak effort comfortably saved by Mendes, while Lenehan saw his shot from distance deflected for a corner.

The hosts were enjoying plenty of possession but Vics were making them work hard for every opportunity. Beigan again tested Mendes with a powerful effort, but the Vics goalkeeper was equal to it, while Declan Daniels glanced an effort wide in the 29th minute.

Vics remained dangerous on the counter and came close to doubling their advantage. Rokka unleashed a powerful half-volley which Mason did well to punch away. Moments later, a fine Vics move saw Atkinson and Whyte both opt to pass rather than shoot before the ball was laid across to Duckworth, whose first-time effort was straight at the keeper.

Bootle had the final chance of the opening 45 minutes, but Ben Hodkinson could only scuff his effort wide when well placed.

The second half was a masterclass in collective defending from Vics, who combined a disciplined shape with a constant threat on the break.

Bootle had half chances through Hughes and Forwood, but Mendes dealt comfortably with both efforts. Vics then went agonisingly close to extending their lead in the 58th minute.

Atkinson raced down the left, cut inside and delivered a superb low cross towards the back post, but George Nugent could only divert his effort wide when it looked like the perfect opportunity to make it 2–0.

Three Vics corners followed in quick succession without reward, before Max Sutton produced an excellent run down the left and burst into the penalty area. His cut-back just failed to find the waiting Joe Duckworth.

Then came a huge let-off for Vics in the 68th minute. A loose pass from Lawson presented Bootle with an opening and the ball was squared across to Hodkinson. With the goal seemingly at his mercy, however, he somehow put his effort wide of an empty net.

Bootle continued to push. Hodkinson fired a free-kick over the wall and wide, before Hughes blasted well over from the edge of the box as the hosts desperately searched for an equaliser.

Vics remained composed and continued to manage the game impressively. Matty Clarke headed just wide from a Vics free-kick as Bootle's ideas began to run out.

There was still one final piece of drama in stoppage time.

Bootle found space for a low volley which looked destined for the corner, but Mendes produced a magnificent diving save to his right, tipping the ball onto the post and behind for a corner. It was a crucial intervention from the Vics keeper and one which ensured there would be no late heartbreak.

The final whistle soon followed, confirming a hard-earned and thoroughly deserved 1–0 victory for Northwich Vics.

Another clean sheet, another determined team performance and another FA Cup victory. Lawson's stunning 13th-minute strike proved enough to send Vics through to the next round, where they will face Atherton Collieries.

It was perhaps not as dramatic as Sunday's encounter, but it was every bit as satisfying. Vics showed exactly what was required on a cup night: discipline, resilience, hard work and the ability to take a big chance when it arrived.

The victory also brought up an impressive seventh clean sheet in eight matches this season — a remarkable foundation on which to build.
