Goals : Northwich Vics : Sutton 29’

Beverley started the match on the front foot and Nugent had to be alert as early as the 4th minute to put a dangerous ball across goal out for a corner. Then they had a long range shot go wide before James Piercy forced Mendes in the Vics net into a great save from a powerful header by the big centre-back. Vics were struggling to get forward and Mendes made another great save in the 13th minute as he palmed away a curling shot from Town. Lee Jackson then brilliantly got across to deny Aris Cunha when we was going through on goal. Vics finally got going and Duckworth did well to control a long ball over the top and got a shot away which was saved by the keeper’s legs. Then in the 29th minute, Duckworth was set clear but was forced wide, but he superbly beat his man, and crossed low across the box for Max Sutton to turn the ball into the net, an unlikely but very welcome source for Vics’ first goal of the season! This gave Vics a bit of confidence and they should have gone two up in the 38th minute as a Beverley defender slipped trying to cut out a long ball leaving Matty Birchall clear one on one with Overton in the Town net. He easily went round him but could only fire the ball into the side netting from an acute angle . The half closed with Beverley going close again as a shot was deflected and just grazed the post as it went wide.

HALF TIME : Northwich Vics 1 Beverley Town 0

Vics were happy for Beverley to have most of the ball whilst looking to hit them on the break with long ball down the wings but were indebted to keeper Mendes for producing three excellent saves in quick succession to deny them an equaliser in the 53rd minute. With the Vics’ defence looking firm at the back, Town were struggling to break them down and chances were limited and Vics were looking lively on the break with substitute Ryan Atkinson stretching them down the right in particular. Indeed it was Vics who went closest to increasing their lead when in the 84th minute, Matty Clarke produced a stinging shot which whistled past the post. Despite a couple of nervy moments as Town had free kicks in good positions just outside the area, Vics held firm and closed out the match to gain a valuable win and to progress to the next round and a match against Bootle FC.
