Northwich Victoria claimed early pre-season silverware as they edged local rivals Witton Albion on penalties to win the Vijay Anthwal Shield, following a closely contested 1–1 draw in regular time.
First Half:
Vics started the brighter of the two sides, particularly down the right flank where Kandeke’s pace and direct running caused Witton problems on the counter. However, momentum began to shift midway through the half, with Witton asserting themselves and enjoying a dominant spell of possession.
Northwich suffered a setback on 29 minutes when Kieran Hamm was forced off through injury, disrupting their rhythm.
Witton capitalised on their pressure shortly after, breaking the deadlock through Joel Bembo-Leta, who rose highest to power a header home from a well-delivered corner.
Despite going behind, Northwich responded admirably and found an equaliser just before half-time. A free-kick into the box was nodded back across goal by Harry Davis, and Will Lloyd was on hand to head in from close range, bringing the sides level.
Half Time: Witton Albion 1–1 Northwich Victoria
Second Half:
The second half began with high energy from both teams. A nervy moment for Witton saw one of their own defenders come close to heading into his own net, narrowly clearing the bar following a dangerous Vics corner.
Vics goalkeeper Mendes was the standout performer after the break, producing two superb saves to deny Witton from long range and keep his side level. His composure and shot-stopping were vital in a game that became increasingly cagey.
Substitute Bevan Burey nearly caught Witton off guard with a clever quick free-kick, but his low effort flashed just wide of the post.
As the match wore on, chances dried up, and both sides looked content to take the contest to a penalty shootout to decide the winner.
Penalty Shootout:
With the game finishing 1–1 after 90 minutes, the Vijay Anthwal Shield was to be decided from the spot. Mendes was again the hero, saving two Witton penalties to give Northwich the edge. Defender Max Sutton stepped up with the decisive kick, coolly converting to seal a 5–4 shootout win for the Vics.
Final Score:
Witton Albion 1–1 Northwich Victoria
(Northwich Victoria win 5–4 on penalties)
Summary:
A strong early showing, a resilient comeback, and heroics from goalkeeper Mendes saw Northwich Victoria lift the Vijay Anthwal Shield in a spirited pre-season encounter. While still early days, the Vics will take confidence from the performance and result as they build towards the new campaign.
