Vics’ began this F.A Vase tie completely on the front-foot in a whirlwind start, the visitors completely pinned back in the opening exchanges.
On 8’ Joel Brownhill volleyed over the bar from Joe Camozzi’s deep cross on the right.
Soon after on 14’ - Rob Doran burst through on goal from Brian Matthews’ headed assist, facing the whites of the keepers’ eyes he completely fluffed his lines and side-footed a poor effort into the glove-man Callum Fieldings’ hands from 12 yards, a golden chance.
The game continued in the same vein as Main’ were defending for their lives, and Vics’ needed to make a break through; such was their dominance.
On 19’ Joel Brownhill sent a deft header from ten yards just wide of the far post - the Main’ keeper’ almost certainly had it covered though; an arcing cross by John Connolly had picked out the hit-man.
On 23’ Mains’ first sortie forward resulted in a corner, Danny Frost’s long jinking run finally being thwarted by Brandon Barski.
The visitors then grew into the game a little and on 36’ - Josh Nodder blazed a great shot goal-wards from eighteen yards, it took a deflection off a committed Joe Camozzi’s heel and Vics’ keeper’ Taberner amazingly finger-tipped the ball onto the bar for a corner, it was an incredible save.
Five minutes before the break on 40’ Joel Brownhill fired wide from fifteen yards with the Main’ rear-guard all at sea; a good chance. The ball had fallen to him after the keeper’ denied fellow front-man Rob Doran’s prodded effort.

HALF-TIME - Vics’ 0-0 Maltby Main.

Soon after the resumption the green and whites’ made the all important break-through - Billy Whittle fired right-footed firmly into the roof of the Main’ net from 15 yards after latching onto John Connolly’s cushioned assist. Visiting keeper’ Fielding was beaten all ends up. It was a lead that Vics’ fully deserved.
Main’ mounted a riposte though, on 54’ Main’ front-man Ross Duggan skimmed a shot wide from a tight angle, but Vics’ glove-man Danny Taberner looked to have it covered in any case.
This stung Vics’ back into action, a minute later on 55’ John Connolly drilled in a left-foot shot from twenty-two yards, the ball cannoned back off the upright with Main’ keeper Callum Fielding a static spectator.
Main had the next chance on 66’, Jed McGowan saw his snapshot gathered at the second attempt by Taberner but Vics’ defending was resolute overall led by the irrepressible Brandon Barski - and the match-clinching goal arrived six minutes later on 72’ when Joel Brownhill’s darting run down the right channel ended with him sending over an excellent cross that Main’ left-back and captain Joe Austin hacked away to safety past the far post by inches and nearly a calamitous own goal. From the resulting excellently swung in corner-kick taken by Billy Whittle; hit-man Brian Matthews applied the finishing touch from short range to Brandon Barski’s hooked left-foot shot from fifteen yards. Whittle’s corner had caused consternation in the Main’ rear-guard.
With time running out; Josh Nodder, the ‘main’ man on the day for Maltby, saw his fizzing right-foot effort saved low down by Taberner, just before the signalling of three minutes of added on time which Vics’ saw out with consummate ease to book their place in the next round of the F.A Vase.

Vics’ Man of the match as chosen by Match sponsors RADIO NORTHWICH - Midfield maestro John Connolly.

Vics’ M.O.M - Brandon Barski. Yet another superlative performance by the former Clitheroe stopper. Repelled a dangerous Main’ attack, and controlled and unflappabie in and out of possession.

Vics’ boss Steve Wilkes’ verdict on the impressive win -

"A brilliant team performance from all the boys today. A massive thanks to Scott Campbell (first team coach) and Rob Sadler (GK cosch) who’d watched them twice this week and gave the lads a spot on run-down of Maltby. We knew how they’d play, very direct. We set out to nullify exactly that and the players stuck to the game plan superbly.
It’s difficult to single anyone out individually to be fair after a performance like that but Danny Taberner made two fantastic saves at crucial times.
We actually could and should have won by more. It’s always nice when the opposition manager tells you at the end of the game, we’re the best team they’ve played all season.
We need to play like we’ve played today in every game and we will keep progressing in all competitions.
Onto the next round."
