Northwich Victoria are delighted to announce the signing of versatile midfielder/defender Matty Coughlan ahead of the new campaign!
If the name sounds familiar to the Trickies faithful, that’s because it is. Matty briefly joined the Vics in December 2024, making his debut as a substitute in the Boxing Day Derby against 1874 Northwich, before returning to Burscough in mid-January 2025. He rounded out the year with a spell at Barnton, signing for them in November 2025.
Now, with a fresh pre-season under his belt, Matty is back in the green and white—fully fit and ready to show the Vics supporters exactly what he can do.
An Impressive Footballing Resume
Matty brings a wealth of North West footballing experience to the squad. He began his journey in the academy ranks at Bolton Wanderers before moving into Salford City’s youth setup in 2016.
Since then, he has built up an impressive non-league pedigree:
Burscough: A club where he has enjoyed multiple successful stints, including racking up 19 appearances during the 2024/25 season.
Witton Albion: Two separate spells, alongside dual-registration stints gaining valuable minutes at AFC Liverpool and Bootle.
Skelmersdale United: Adding further grit and experience to his resume.
The Gaffer’s View
First Team Gaffer Lee Duckworth is thrilled to reunite with a player he knows incredibly well, stating:
"Matty has played for me a number of times before. He’s very comfortable in possession and can operate in a number of positions across the pitch. His versatility is a huge asset.
He wasn’t fully fit during his first stint with the club, so I’m sure he will be ready to show the supporters the real Matty after a strong pre-season."
"Excited to Get Stuck In"
Speaking on his return to the club, Matty Coughlan shared his excitement for the upcoming challenge:
"I'm excited to get stuck in, get to know the lads and the supporters. I have played under Ducko before so I know what he is about. Looking forward to seeing it in motion for the Vics this season."
Everyone at Northwich Victoria would like to give Matty a warm welcome back to the club. We can't wait to see him out on the pitch!
