A hard-fought but deserved victory for Vics. The match started fairly slowly, with Vics having slightly the majority of the play with the only real chance coming when Darrhyl Mason took advantage of confusion in the 1874 defence and fired a shot in which Lever managed to recover and block before Robert Doran turned his man and fired a shot in which Coates did well to keep out. It was Vics who made the breakthrough when in the 25th minute Andrew FitzGerald beat Coates to a flighted free-kick in from Harvey Whyte, to head the ball home. Two minutes later, it was nearly 2-0 when Darrhyl Mason's flick went just over the bar after a delightful ball in from Doran. 1874 then started to get back into the game more and after 41 minutes, Taberner had to be at his best to first save Kennerley's drilled shot , then secondly react quickly to divert McGowan's attempt from the rebound. However on 45 minutes, 1874 got their equaliser when Mike Koral did well to set Samuel Hare one on one with Taberner, and he finished neatly.

HALF-TIME - Northwich Vics 1 1874 Northwich 1

The second half began end to end, with Taberner producing a diving save to deny McGowan after 47 minutes, and then Coates smothered Joel Brownhill's left footed shot from 8 yards out. Vics restored their lead after 58 minutes when Rob Doran sent an angled header into the net from 6 yards after another perfectly flighted free kick in from Harvey Whyte. 6 minutes later, provider turned goalscorer as Whyte spun on a sixpence in the penalty area, and sent a right footed shot in the corner of the net to send the Vics fans wild. However 1874 soon pulled a goal back as McGowan converted a penalty after Fleming had mistimed a tackle on Koral. It could have been a nervy last twenty minutes or so for Vics, but they brilliantly managed the game from thereon in, and restricted 1874 to hardly a chance whilst always looking dangerous on the break.

Steve Wilkes’ view of the match : “A brilliant day for everyone at the football club. The players knew how much it meant to them to beat 1874, and I’m so pleased we finally got it done. Having said that it’s only 3pts and we move onto Wednesday’s tough fixture at home to West Didsbury. I thought the players were fantastic in everything they did yesterday. I don’t like singling players out but I thought Darryhl Mason worked his socks off and Harvey Whyte just has so much energy it’s frightening. The last word has to once again go to the fans, who out sung 1874 from the very first minute. I’m sure some will wake up with a sore head on Sunday morning.”
