Vics’ made a welcome return to form defeating the unbeaten second-placed side.
The game opened up with both sides looking to attack - on 3’ Vics’ Connolly caused trouble for Silsden down the left hand side as he twisted and turned past ex-Vics’ skipper Lyndon. He put a great ball across and Whittle can't find the back of the net with his twenty-yard shot, which visiting glove-man Sam Lee saved well.
Silsden replied with Mark Everingham’s pot-shot from the edge of the box working Vics’ net-minder Taberner well on 12’.
On 27’ Joel Brownhill had the chance of the game so far when he was slipped into the box by a threaded ball by game-star Billy Whittle and controlled on his chest, but miscued his twelve-yard shot wide.
On the half-hour Danny Taberner produced a good save down low to his right to deny Silsden the opening goal, a low raking shot by front-man Luke Rhodes.

HALF-TIME - Vics’ 0-0 Silsden AFC.

The second half began with Vics’ on the front foot launching many raids on the visitors’ defence, and the pressure told on the hour with the breakthrough. Joel Brownhill’s left-wing run saw him cross the ball into the lurking Brian Matthews who couldn’t get the shot off from 7 yards out with the keeper’ colliding with the hit-man. The ball ran loose to Billy Whittle who side-footed into the corner of the net from ten yards past two desperate Sills’ defenders who were stood on the goal-line.
Silsden were struggling to make any in-roads to get back into the game and their only real chance in the first twenty-five minutes of the second period was a tame header by Joe Mitchell that Vics’ keeper Taberner easily dealt with on 66’.
Vics’ largely dominated and on 73’ Dom Craig saw his stooping header drop the wrong side of the upright from Kirtis Monson’s left-wing centre.
The game was put beyond the visitors’ reach on 78’ when Joel Brownhill emphatically dispatched a penalty past Sam Lee; the free-hit being awarded for a handball against centre-back Dan Illingworth who was trying to prevent Brian Matthews getting on to the end of Brad Cookes’ lofted assist. It was nearly three on 84’ Rob Doran wom a second ball and played Dom Craig through. His cross was deflected towards goal but it canonned off the base of the post and was cleared. Vics’ saw out the 4 minutes of time added on with no problems save for a Taberner tip round the post to deny Sill’s sub’ Lee Spires shot to claim a much-needed three points aftee back-to-back league defeats on the road.
FULL-TIME - Vics 2 - 0 Silsden AFC

Vics’ MOM as chosen by Sponsors Gordon Brown & Sons - Dominic Craig.

Vics’ MOM - Billy Whittle. A sparkling return to form for the young industrious midfielder. Broke the deadlock on the hour and made some telling passes to spark most of the Green and Whites’ enterprising play.

Vics’ boss Steve Wilkes’ post-match verdict -

“It was important that we got the three points today, after two disappointing defeats in the road.
We knew it was going to be a tough game against a team that hadn’t lost this season in the league.
I’ve been critical of the players when we’ve been beaten recently so they deserve a huge amount of credit today because at no point in the game did we look uncomfortable.
I’d had a couple of reports about them, so we knew their strengths and weaknesses and we’d worked hard in training to nullify them and the players put what we’d asked them to do perfectly out on the pitch.

There’s never any easy games in this league. It’s so important we get our away form matching our home form and that starts next week away at Squires Gate.”
