Vics suffered heartbreak in the 2nd leg of the FA Vase Semi-Final as , after 120 minutes of an enthralling stalemate, they lost 5-3 in a penalty shootout to send Chertsey Town through to the Final at Wembley in May.
All square after the first match, both teams had chances to win in an exciting end to end match with Chertsey playing the more controlled football but failing to penetrate Vics' firm defence too often, whilst Vics were content to wait for the breakaway and the long ball up top where Rob Doran tested the Chertsey defence to it's limits.
Vics started brightly and Darrhyl Mason quickly chanced a goalward volley , but it was blocked and cleared, whilst after 9 minutes, Robert Doram got on the end of a peach of a free kick from Ryan Winder which Chertsey's keeper Jupp was equal to it. Chertsey's first chance came after 15 minutes when Baxter pulled his shot wide when well placed, should really have done better. A few minutes later, Rob Doran held off a challenge and drove up to the edge of the area, but like Chertsey just before, pulled his shot wide. Chertsey responded immediately and Jack Fleming had to be alert to clear a dangerous cross from Binns for a corner which Vics only half-cleared but the referee blew for a foul. Vics nearly broke the deadlock after 28 7 minutes, as Robert Doran got in behind the defence down the right and drilled a low cross to where Darrhyl Mason was steaming in to apply the finishing touch but was an outstretched leg of a Chertsey defender just nipped the ball away. So close ! The match was very open now with Vics soaking up the Chertsey pressure fairly easily whilst always looking dangerous with Rob Doran in particular keeping the Chertsey defence alert when the ball was cleared up to him.

The second half continued in the same pattern with Joel Brownhill jinking past a defender and getting a shot away which was just wide after 47 minutes , and then Binns for Chertsey was denied by Danny Taberner as he got down quickly to his right to save. Vics were now pushing more , and shots by first Brownhill then Ryan Winder were just wide, before Joel Brownhill again cut in from the left, jinked past 3 defenders along the edge of the penalty area, before shooting only to be denied by a great save from Jupp. However Taberner had to be alert after 71 minutes when some slack defending from Vics allowed a free header in the box. Chertsey were now pushing strongly in the last 10 minutes, and thought they had taken the lead after 87 minutes when good work by Guentchev and Baxter set up Driver but Taberner produced a world class save to keep Vics in the tie. Chertsey weren't finished yet though and in the final minute of normal time, Tabbs denied Driver yet again as he was through on gaol to send the tie into extra time.

Extra Time :
Vics earned a free kick after 94 minutes as Doran was taken out, but Ryan Winder's free kick sailed over the bar, whilst at the other end, Baxter's half volley after being set up by Guentchev suffered the same fate. Another Vics quick breakaway resulted in Jordan Darr racing through on goal, but his finish was straight at Jupp . 3 minutes into the second period of extra time, a short corner by Chertsey caught Vics napping but the end shot was weak and straight at Taberner. The patttern of play continued with Chertsey probing but Vics always a threat on the break, and in the final minute, Rob Doran broke away only for his shot to be saved by the keeper's legs. So onto Penalties with Chertsey having the advantage of going first. Baxter and Craig both confidently scored their respective first penalties, followed by Guentchev slotting his away for Chertsey's 2nd. Vics 2nd by Ryan Winder was then saved by Jupp and the pressure was on. Both sides scored their respective 3rd and 4th penalty with Tabbs desperately close to saving the 3rd leaving Murphy to fire Chertsey into the final with his decisive penalty.
Chertsey win 5-3 on Penalties after extra time .
