VICS BOUNCE BACK IN SOME STYLE

Vics bounced back from their humiliating defeat against Congleton in superb fashion, with a convincing win against Romulus in blustery conditions.
The first half was a fairly even affair with both teams trying to cope with the wind. Vics started well with Sam Unwin firing narrowly wide and then Anton Smith having a goal bound half volley deflected just wide. However Romulus then had a goal ruled out for offside, but did go ahead in the 15th minute with a well struck free-kick from 25 yards from Ryan Nesbitt. The match then went a little scrappy as both teams struggled to keep the ball for long and there was little goalmouth action. The Vics started to gain control after the half hour mark with Smith, Clarke and Lloyd winning the midfield battle. Matty Clarke slammed a shot goalwards, after good work from Anton Smith, and Unwin put the rebound over the top, then Smith and Clarke again teamed up to find Dylan Switters free but he curled his shot over the bar. Then after 39 minutes, Will Lloyd won the ball back in midfield, and fed Smith who drove forward and fired a shot from 30 yards in under the keeper to put Vics level. Adam Reid then pulled off a great save to tip a low effort wide for a corner to keep Vics level at the break.

HALF-TIME : Romulus 1 Northwich Vics 1

The Vics with the wind in their favour, dominated the second half, and it was only a matter of time before they took the lead. A deep corner was only parried away by Gwilliams in the Romulus net, and the ball fell to Dylan Switters who smashed a half volley into the back of the net. Vics were playing some lovely attacking football now, and really should have put the game to bed but the end product didn’t match their build up play. Switters shot wide in the 59th minute after good play from Clarke, then had a free kick deflected for a corner in the 62nd. An excellent move of several one twos in the 65th minute gave Camozzi a chance but his shot was well blocked. Anton Smith tried another long range effort which the keeper managed to keep hold of this time, then in the 72nd minute, substitute Eli Fisher cut inside from the right, and laid the ball across to Camozzi 10 yards out but his shot was excellently blocked. Romulus barely threatened in the second half, as Fisher, Parker and then Parker again all had chances to extend Vics lead and seal the match before the referee brought the match to a halt.

FULL-TIME : Romulus 1 Northwich Vics 2

An excellent response by Vics to Wednesday’s defeat. A dominating performance in unhelpful conditions with the only criticism being not being clinical enough in-front of goal especially in the second half.
