Vics started slowly and after 9 minutes should have been 1 down when a low cross by McGowan left Whitlock with the simplest of chances to tap in, but he skied his shot over the bar. Neither team had really got going but after 21 minutes, good play down the right from 1874 led to the ball coming right across Vics’ box where Whitlock was left in acres of space, and this time he made no mistake. Despite having an equal share of the ball, Vics were rarely threatening, and indeed Mottram had to pull off a great save to deny McGowan , but 1874 went further ahead after 36 minutes when Vics gave the ball away and the ball fell kindly to Waite-Jackson whose first time hard and low shot found the corner of the net.

The half opened with Vics pushing forward more, and a good strike from Berrisford tested the 1874 keeper, but Mottram was still the busier keeper as 1874 were always a danger on the break and he saved well from another Waite-Jackson effort. The only other chance for Vics was a McDonald free kick after 80 minutes which hit the wall and curled away for a corner and 1874 easily saw the remaining 10 minutes out

Plenty of effort but ultimately depressing performance. Too many bookings (for both teams) , and a deserved victory for 1874
