Northwich Victoria v 1874 Northwich : 5th August FA Cup

Northwich Victoria v 1874 Northwich : 5th August FA Cup

A dramatic start to this mid Cheshire derby, as 1874 were awarded a penalty after only 3 minutes, when Vics full-back Danny O’Donnell pulled back Scott McGowan in the area, and the 1874 striker duly fired home from the penalty spot. Ten minutes in, 1874 were nearly 2 up, but Vics keeper Mottram produced a brilliant save from a Whitlock effort. Olly Walker then collected a ball from a throw in, turned in the area but his shot was straight at the keeper. Vics were again indebted to Richie Mottram, when he saved well from a Hinds shot after an 1874 corner. By now, it was a fairly even game with both teams having half chances, Hinds pulled a shot wide for 1874 whilst Berrisford had an effort just wide for Vics. As the half started with drama, it ended with drama as well when 1874 s Paul Connor was red carded for kicking out at a Vics player after a tackle on him.

HALF TIME: Northwich Victoria 0 1874 Northwich 1

The first chance of the second half fell to the Vics, when a free kick was missed by everyone and fell to Brian Matthews at the far post, but his effort was well saved by Hall in the 1874 goal. Surprisingly it was the 10 men of 1874 who were now on top, and it was no surprise when Scott McGowan put them 2 up with a cute lob, aided by a slight deflection, over Mottram. 1874 then had a great chance to make the game safe, when Lyndon lost the ball but Mottram saved well from Whitlock. Vics finally woke up, and after 66 minutes Stu McDonald produced a great turn and cross from the right, which was powerfully headed home by Brian Matthews. Vics sensed they were back in the game, and it wasn’t long before a brilliant ball from Mike McDonald found substitute Jordan Cobley on the right of the 1874 goal, and he struck a powerful shot which gave Hall no chance in the 1874 net. Olly Walker after 81 minutes, then found space just outside the area but his shot was just wide, and a Brian Matthews’ shot a few minutes later also just curled round the right hand post. In the 7 minutes of injury time, 1874 nearly snatched it as a Hinds effort rolled along the cross bar before being cleared.

Final Score: Northwich Victoria 2 (Matthews , Cobley) 1874 Northwich 2
